Common Early Pregnancy Symptoms
Early signs of pregnancy may include:
- A missed period
- Tender or swollen breasts
- Nausea
- Unusual tiredness
- Frequent urination
- Mood changes
Pregnancy is not the only reason these changes happen. Stress, illness, hormonal shifts, and an irregular cycle can cause similar symptoms. The only way to know whether human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is present is to take a pregnancy test.
What If You Already Took a Home Test?
Home pregnancy tests can be useful, but the timing and the way the test is taken can affect the result. Testing too early may produce a false-negative result because your body has not yet produced enough hCG for the test to detect. Early in pregnancy, hCG levels rise rapidly, often nearly doubling every two to three days before peaking around eight to 10 weeks.
If the result is negative and your period still does not begin, you may need to test again or contact a medical provider.
A positive test means hCG was detected. It cannot tell you how far along you are, where the pregnancy is located, or whether the pregnancy appears to be progressing.
What Comes After a Positive Test?
Acts of Hope is not a medical clinic and does not perform ultrasounds. If you qualify and appointments are available, we may be able to refer you to a medical provider for an ultrasound. The scan may estimate gestational age, identify the pregnancy’s location, and look for a fetal heartbeat.
You can also sit down with a mentor and talk through abortion, adoption, and parenting: what each involves, what resources and referrals are available, and whatever questions matter most in your situation. The conversation is confidential and at no cost, and nothing about it commits you to a decision.
